Black Caviar wins epic Lightning

E-mail Print PDF

World champion Black Caviar bolted away with her second Lightning Stakes (1,000m) at Flemington, scoring the 19th win of her unconquered career. The victory was Black Caviar's ninth at Group One level and equals the Australasian record for consecutive wins set by Gloaming (1919-21) and Desert Gold (1915-17). The chips were down on Saturday as her great rival Hay List threw down the gauntlet and looked a danger inside the final 400 metres. For a fleeting moment some dared to ponder the unthinkable, but jockey Luke Nolen asked Black Caviar ($1.10 favourite) for the supreme effort and she edged away to score by 1-3/4 lengths in a blistering 55.53 seconds.

World Champion Sprinter Black Caviar took her unbeaten record to 19 when claiming her second Group One VRC Coolmore Lightning Stakes at Flemington which marks the start of the lucrative 10-race Global Sprint Challenge. Coming back from 1400m of the C.F. Orr Stakes last week the superstar mare was pushed by world class sprinter Hay List down the Flemington straight to complete today’s dash in an amazingly slick 55.53 seconds, just 0.03 seconds outside of Special’s track record set in 1988. In winning today Black Caviar (5m Bel Esprit-Helsinge) matched the Australasian record of the most consecutive metropolitan wins (19) set over 90 years ago, while taking her career prizemoney to $5.2million.

The filly was sent out the hot favourite but punters were worried early when the usual speedy youngster was slow to begin. But they needn't have worried with the daughter of Fastnet Rock finishing full of running on the inside of her rivals to win in good style.

All Too Hard and Raceway impress

High profile two-year-old colts All Too Hard and Raceway proved too good for their opposition at Flemington and Warwick Farm respectively today, adding valuable juvenile black type wins to their resumes. Black Caviar’s little brother ALL TOO HARD ($1,025,000 2011 Easter, 2c Casino Prince-Helsinge) was on debut in the Listed VRC Talindert Stakes over the Flemington straight 1100m and after settling just off the speed the strapping colt showed a superior turn of foot to his rivals at the 300m mark to race away to a one and a half length victory over Liberty Rock and Timely Truce. The finishing race time of 1:03.49 on the Dead 4 track was the quickest Talindert Stakes for a number of years, including those won by subsequent two-year-old Group One winners Star Witness and Miss Finland.

E-mail Print PDF

Black Caviar dispelled any small doubts of running past 1200m when scoring a breathtaking victory with consummate ease in the Group One MRC C.F. Orr Stakes over 1400m in front of a huge crowd at Caulfield. The superstar mare’s record now stands at 18 wins from 18 starts, eight at Group One level, amassing $4.74million in prizemoney, a great return on the $210,000 trainer Peter Moody paid for the Gilgai Farm bred galloper at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale for her lucky owners G J & Mrs K J Wilkie, Werrett Bloodstock P/L Synd (Mgr: N Werrett), C & Mrs J Madden, P Hawkes & D M & Mrs J Taylor. Black Caviar ($210,000 2008 Premier, 5m Bel Esprit-Helsinge) had over three lengths to spare on the line over Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed and dual Group One winner Playing God after taking a stranglehold of the day’s feature with an amazing 10.64second sectional between the 400m and 200m.
