O'Lonhro off to flying start

E-mail Print PDF

Larneuk Stud’s exciting young stallion O’Lonhro has taken to his new career like a duck to water. “He is doing everything right,” said Larneuk’s Neville Murdoch, “he is extremely professional and we could not be happier with him.” A strong, imposing 16.2hh dark brown, near black stallion built very much in the mould of his outstanding sire Lonhro, O’Lonhro hails from a strong Australian family that produced another stakes winner on the weekend. The Ron Quinton trained M’lady Pedrille, courageous all the way winner of the Reginald Allen Quality – a race won six years ago by her close relation and stablemate Mamzelle Pedrille.

Setting up a good pace in front, the lightly raced and promising three-year-old gave her well credentialled rivals every chance to catch her but when challenged, she just kept fighting. “I was panicking when she wanted to run along too keenly early,” Quinton admitted, “she got to the 700 metres before she wanted to come back to her rider.” “She’s always shown me a lot of promise,” he continued, “and as it turned out it was a real, real gutsy effort.” Not backing up in Saturday’s Flight Stakes, M’lady Pedrille will be given time to mature. “She has the scope to be an even nicer filly in the autumn,” Quinton said, “I don't want to be hurrying her – I would like to look after her for the long term.” “She’s always shown she can gallop but she hasn't had a lot of luck with things like bad barriers. Today she pinged the gates like a rocket and took advantage of it.”

A half sister to Madame Pedrille who won the Listed Nivison on this same day last year, M’lady Pedrille is a daughter of Damzelle Pedrille whose seven times stakes winning full sister Mamzelle Pedrille is the dam of O’Lonhro. This is a prolific family that has been producing high class performers for generations, its other members including the Gr.3 sprinter I Am Invincible (as a two-year-old in training considered the fastest youngster in Sydney), the VRC Oaks heroine Innesfell and the legendary champion Flight – dual W.S Cox Plate winner. Ancestress of this family is the acclaimed matriarch Chelandry whose descendants have been in great form in the UK of late, tough campaigner Balthazaar’s Gift (already a multiple Group winner) flying home from to take out the Gr.2 Park Stakes at Doncaster whilst Arctic Cosmos raced away with the Gr.1 St Leger at the same track.

O’Lonhro stands for $9900 (incl gst) at Larneuk Stud in Victoria.
